If the pay and benefits made it worthwhile, Americans would take those jobs. They did in the 1930s out of desperation with far less than what current, mostly illegal, workers make. No disrespect to the people doing those jobs today; they work very hard under some dreadful conditions. It is always a shame when workers are exploited so that others can make more money.

I agree with you t'mom but it would work possiably for truck farms how ever many farms sell to middle men who sell to big prossesers and so on by the time it reaches us the cost would be all out of proporsion to a lot of us we can't make up the dif. by voting ourselves raises.
Has anyone heard the name Mike Rowe before? He does this little show on the Discover Channel called Dirty Jobs.
Watch a few seasons of that and one will learn there is no such thing as a job an American won't do.
What the farmers are whining about is an American won't collect their crop for $4 an hour. I think they are upset because if/when they need to hire American citizens, which it seems they don't want to do, they will need to pay a livable wage and adhere to employment laws. Boo freakin' hoo. If they start to lose too much money they can always cry to the gov't and get a subsidy. They have been handing those out for decades.
Many unemployed have spouses or family to worry about. Minimum wage does not cut it, we need more just to cover simple things like food, rent/mortgage, electricity, and water.
Quick people, do the math. Add up your rent/mortgage, water, power, and food expenses for the month. Then, take the minimum wage (it's about $7.25/hr) and multiply it by 40 (40 hours a week). Multiply that by 52 for the weeks in the year. It equals $15,080 before taxes. How many could live off that? If one's rent/mortgage is on the low side at $1,000/month they might find it hard to eat, heat their home, bathe, and turn on a light with only $3,080 to last an entire year. Again, remember that $3,080 is before taxes. After Social Security and Medicare withholding are taken out one would be left with even less to live on. Could you live on $2,000 for a year?
